<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The problem: trading time for money as a creator</strong></h2>



<p>After leaving his life insurance sales job in 2020, Gannon invested in learning all he could about marketing by getting hands on and filming content himself. That landed him a gig at a marketing agency, where he focused primarily on&nbsp; lead generation. This started his fascination with audience data.</p>

<p>&#8220;Kit is email. That&#8217;s it,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Email and automations, but mainly it&#8217;s helping you own an audience. Because it has done that really well, I think it&#8217;s the best platform for running email marketing.&#8221;</p>



<p>He&#8217;s cautious about platforms that try to do everything. &#8220;I&#8217;m very hesitant of the all-in-one platforms. They tend to be really good at one or two things and not everything. The all-in-one platforms are not great at email.&#8221;</p>

Tags and segmentation let him see who&#8217;s interested in specific offers. &#8220;I can see the people who are interested, and if they haven&#8217;t purchased within 48 hours, I can reach out with a personal email or voice note,&#8221; he explains. Custom fields add another layer of personalization.</p>



<p>More than any individual feature, what matters to Gannon is the ability to always reach at least some of his audience at any time—something he says you&#8217;ll never achieve on Instagram.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Owning your audience vs. renting it from social platforms</strong></h2>



<p>For Gannon, email isn&#8217;t just another marketing channel. It&#8217;s the foundation of his business.</p>



<p>&#8220;Instagram and other social platforms don&#8217;t really tell us when algorithms change. You&#8217;ll just notice a difference in views and you&#8217;re like, &#8216;What&#8217;s going on?'&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Your reach can drop off a cliff for months and you&#8217;re like, &#8216;I didn&#8217;t change anything.'&#8221;</p>



<p>Email solves that problem. </p>

<p>I look at email as a way to reach more of your most loyal fans, which is always great. But it&#8217;s also a way, at least for me as a short form creator, to dive deeper with people in really technical strategies.</p>

<p>His three-minute Instagram videos can only explain so much. But in an email or a 45-minute YouTube tutorial linked from his newsletter, he can go deep. &#8220;I can guarantee at least a few hundred people click on it. Otherwise, they wouldn&#8217;t have seen it.&#8221;</p>



<p>When it comes time to sell, email is where real revenue happens. &#8220;I have the data on what I can reasonably expect in terms of revenue based off of all the things that I track in Kit. Everything is just totally customized to what I know about this person.&#8221;</p>
